May Friendship Day celebration nears
The local celebration of May Friendship Day will begin at 9:30 a.m. May 2 at Ave Maria Village, located at 501 19th St. NE.
Women from all congregations and interested individuals are invited to attend.
The Church Women United Celebration is an annual event nationwide. The 2014 theme for the celebration is “We are in God’s hands and we are God’s hands,” based on Mark 10:43-45 and Deuteronomy 15: 7-11.
The Fellowship of the Least Coin offering (a penny in the U.S.) will be collected as well as an offering which will be divided between the local Safe Shelter and Weekend Backpack for Kids program through Community Action.
Church Women United began as a collective prayer for peace and reconciliation in a spirit of repentance.
Its roots go back to 1887 when Mrs. Darwin James, president of the Women’s Board of Home Missions (Presbyterian), called for the women of her own denomination to set aside a day “when there shall be confession of individual and national sins, with offerings that will fitly express this contrition.”
Women from other churches soon joined this practice. The movement continued to grow and in 1966 its name became Church Women United.
The motto of Church Women United is “Agreed to Differ, Resolved to Love, United to Serve.”
