The Jamestown High School wrestling team wasn’t about to get shut out this time.

Jamestown put three in the finals at a tournament in Valley City on Saturday, and Paxton Mewes broke through at 138. Mewes’ title came on a 10-3 decision over Wahpeton’s Logan Meyer.

Mewes had a pair of pins on the day with the only real close match coming in the semifinals, when he earned a 5-2 decision over Fargo Davies’ Bryce Burnside.

However, Jamestown lost its other two championship matches, finishing with 80 points and sixth place out of 14 teams.

Host Valley City won the tournament with 188 points, putting six in the finals. All six came away champions including Jordan Magnuson with his 4-0 decision over defending state champion and No. 1-ranked Olaf Hanson at 220 pounds.

A pair of No. 1-ranked wrestlers went at it at 195 in Jamestown’s Eathan Gumke and Valley City’s Zach Doty. Doty, who dealt Gumke his only loss earlier this season, came away with another win, this time by 6-3 decision. Doty is ranked No. 1 at 182, while Gumke is top-ranked at 195.

Also making the finals for Jamestown was sixth-ranked Triston Shipley at 182, but he lost a 2-1 decision to third-ranked Kyle Terrell of Grand Forks Central.

Aside from Mewes, 170-pounder Caleb Ellingson was the only Blue Jay to win their final match. He pinned West Fargo’s Jared Power in 35 seconds for fifth place.

Kyle Anderson lost a 7-3 decision to Davies’ Jacob West to place fourth at 220.

The Blue Jays head to Fargo on Friday and Saturday for the prestigious Rumble on the Red.
