The third annual Jake Star Festival will take place Aug. 15-16 at the LaMoure County Memorial Park, north of Grand Rapids, N.D.

The event was first held in August 2012 to help the LaMoure community heal after the death of 8-year-old Jacob Shockman in April 2012.

Corey Bliss, executive director of Jake Star LLC, said in addition to some new musical acts, the festival will host an ATV safety class and demonstration offered by the North Dakota Department of Parks and Recreation at LaMoure County Memorial Park on Aug. 16.

“It was an ATV accident that took the life of Jacob Shockman,” Bliss said.

Some of the proceeds from the festival will go toward holding youth ATV safety classes around the state, Bliss said. The festival has raised about $40,000 over the last two years, according to Bliss. Funds have gone to Make-A-Wish North Dakota, the Wounded Warrior Project and improvements to parks in LaMoure County.

Jake Star LLC sponsored an off-highway vehicle safety class for youths in May with the NDDPR at the LaMoure County Memorial Park. Bliss said LaMoure County Emergency Services and local law enforcement agencies participated in the class.

“We were told by the North Dakota Parks and Rec guys that we had the second-highest number of kids in the state to take the class,” he said.

While the class is meant for children, anyone may sign up. People who successfully complete the class will receive a free helmet.

Bobby Cyrus, cousin of country music star and actor Billy Ray Cyrus, is the headliner for this year’s festival. He will perform from 10:30 p.m. to midnight on Saturday on the main stage. Alexis Barnick of Jamestown will perform from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Saturday on the main stage. Other musical acts that will be performing Saturday are Whiskey 7, Junk FM, Jeremiah James Korfe and Crankshaft and the Gear Grinders.

DJ Bob will provide music from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Aug. 15 and from when Bobby Cyrus stops performing on Aug. 16 until 2:30 a.m. in the auditorium at memorial park.

Another new event for this year is a 5k walk/run that will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the entrance to memorial park. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.

Bliss said Jake Star LLC will have a paintball course set up this year and will hold a tournament on Saturday afternoon. There is a separate charge to use the paintball course.

“We’ll have open play during the afternoon, then around 5 p.m. we put teams together for a round-robin tournament,” he said.

Camping is available starting at noon on Friday in memorial park.

Tickets are $35 for a general admission pass and $75 for a VIP pass and may be ordered online at www.jakestar.org or by calling 701-883-5790.
