New Year, New You Challenge; Obesity prevention one goal of challenge

The number of overweight and obese individuals in the United States has been on the rise for quite some time. Childhood obesity is currently five times the rate as it was in the mid-1970s. According to the American Heart Association, 23.9 million children are overweight or obese and 12.7 million are obese. For the adults, 154.7 million are overweight or obese and 78.4 million are obese. Sadly the trends predict that the overweight and obese rates of Americans will continue to increase if we stay on our current path.

The prevalence is astounding, as is the costs of health care attributed to obesity. According to the American Heart Association, “The total excess cost related to the current prevalence of adolescent overweight and obesity is estimated to be $254 billion ($208 billion in lost productivity secondary to premature morbidity and mortality and $46 billion in direct medical costs). If current trends in the growth of obesity continue, total health-care costs attributable to obesity could reach $861 to $957 billion by 2030, which would account for 16 percent to 18 percent of U.S. health expenditures.”

Health risks associated with overweight and obesity include:

*Coronary artery disease

*High blood pressure

*Stroke

*Type 2 diabetes

*Abnormal cholesterol levels

*Metabolic syndrome

*Cancer

*Osteoarthritis

*Sleep apnea

*Reproductive problems

*Gallstones

To prevent obesity, create a healthy lifestyle plan for your entire family that includes a healthy eating plan to balance the calories consumed to the calories expended, learn and monitor portion sizes, be active, limit screen time, and keep track of your weight, BMI and waist circumference measurements.

If you are currently overweight, or obese, set a goal for yourself to lose 5 to 10 percent of your body weight over the next six months. There are numerous programs available to assist you on this journey, consult your health care provider to discuss the best option for you.

Through this year’s New Year, New You challenge, nearly each week’s challenge is a tactic and suggested lifestyle habit geared to prevent obesity. We will eat fruits and vegetables, get the right amount of physical activity, learn our body composition, properly hydrate, and get enough sleep. This week’s challenge is to set a goal for yourself; one that should be realistic and achievable within the eight weeks of the challenge. Please choose a goal that will help you to reduce your risk of obesity.

Brussels Sprouts Gratin

2 T unsalted butter

1 pound Brussels sprouts, outer leaves and stems removed

Pinch of red pepper flakes

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup grated white cheddar cheese

1/2 cup bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 400, butter a 2 quart baking dish. Boil Brussels sprouts for 8 to 10 minutes, till tender. Drain and coarsely chop, transfer to baking dish, toss with red pepper salt and pepper. Pour cream on top, sprinkle with cheese and breadcrumbs, dot with butter. Bake till bubbly and golden, about 15 minutes.

Roasted Vegetables With Balsamic Glaze

Pan roast fresh veggies (carrots, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, green or yellow beans, beets)

Drizzle with olive oil, sea salt and fresh ground pepper

Roast till done, drizzle with balsamic glaze.

(You can purchase balsamic glaze in different flavors at most grocery stores.)
