North Minneapolis duplex fire kills 3 children
MINNEAPOLIS -- Three children are dead after an early-morning fire in north Minneapolis Friday, according to authorities.
Fire crews responded to a report of a duplex fire in the 2800 block of Colfax Avenue North in the Hawthorne area of north Minneapolis shortly after 5 a.m., according to fire department spokeswoman Assistant Chief Cherie A. Penn.
Heavy smoke and flame were visible on the second floor of the 2 1/2 story house when crews arrived. Firefighters battled to the second floor before discovering flames had reached the top of the building, authorities said.
More than 40 firefighters were eventually brought in to control the fire, and one was injured, according to Penn.
Three children were killed in the fire, according to Minneapolis Fire Chief John Fruetel. Their ages were not released Friday morning.
Five other victims were taken to either North Memorial Medical Center and Hennepin County Medical Center. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.
Fifteen people lived in the home, fire authorities said. The Red Cross is offering aid to those affected by the fire.
