Jamestown High School’s Erika Hermanson and Andy Oslund, along with the University of Jamestown’s Emerald Gyuricza and Garrett Tenney, have all been selected as the Jamestown Optimist Club’s athletes of the week.

Hermanson, a junior Blue Jay figure skater, competed in the 22nd annual Northern Star International Figure Skating Competition in East Grand Forks on Jan. 17-18. She competes in the preliminary level and earned an eighth-place finish in compulsory, third in free skate (test rack) and first place in artistic.

Oslund, a senior on the Blue Jay boys swimming and diving team, became state qualified in the 200 freestyle with a first-place swim against Williston. He was also third in the 50 free and anchored the third-place 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams at the Blue Jay Invite.

Gyuricza, a sophomore on the Jimmie women’s track and field team, started the 2014 indoor season with a first-place finish in the pole vault at the Northern Indoor Invitation. A native of Missoula, Mont., Gyuricza had a career best vault of 10-7 that moved her up to second place on the Jimmie career list.

Tenney, a senior on the Jimmie men’s track and field team, started his senior season by breaking the University of Jamestown school record in the 35-pound weight throw. Garrett, from Gardnerville, Nev., won the event at the Northern Indoor Invite on Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D., with a toss of 53-1½ to break the record set by Mike Findlay last season.
