Jamestown faced stiff competition on Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D.

A limited amount of Blue Jays went to the prestigious Howard Wood Relays, with three coming home with top eight finishes.

McKayla Orr placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.34 seconds, tying the school record set by Brooke Monson in 2000. Monson ran a 15.1 handheld time, but it equals out to the same under the commonly used FAT system. Orr also finished third in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 45.65 seconds. Both races had more than 80 participants.

“It was a heck of a race,” said Jamestown girls coach Rob Hummel of the 100 hurdles. “There were some great hurdlers down there.”

Kylee Voigt also fared well, nailing down an impressive sixth place in the 400 with a time of 1:02.73. More than 70 girls tried to get into the 400, but they only selected the top 24. Both Voigt and Madison Barnes made the elite group, with Voigt making the top-eight finals.

The 1,600 relay team didn’t place, but did run a state-qualifying time, dropping 5 seconds off their best.

On the boys side, Taylor Orr was eighth in the 300 hurdles with a 41.38, good enough to qualify for state.

“It was only his third-time ever running it,” Jamestown boys coach Ken Gardner said. “We finally got him convinced to try it, and now he’s qualified. He had a really good race.”

Those that didn’t participate went to the Packer Relays on Friday, and the Blue Jays were able to get a new state qualifier out of it. Jenna Stilwell threw the javelin 118 feet, 2 inches to earn her spot at the state meet. The mark puts her second in all of Class A, behind outstanding Grand Forks Red River thrower Hannah Arason.

“She texted me right away after and she was definitely excited about it,” said Hummel, who was in Sioux Falls. “I’m very happy for her.”

Beka Hilgemann came away with fourth place and seventh place in the javelin and discus, respectively.

Logan Anderson was the lone winner of the weekend, besting all comers in the discus. He threw 141-5. He was also fifth in the shot put, while Nolan Love secured fifth in the javelin.

“Logan threw about 6 feet short of state-qualifying,” Gardner said. “He’s fired up to try to get to that point.”

Colt Rasmussen (high) and Noah Wanzek (triple) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the triple jumps. Kyle Schumacher was eighth in the 800. The Blue Jays had their 800 and 3,200 relay teams also finish inside the top eight.

Jamestown heads to the Fargo South Invite on Friday, weather-permitting. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the Blue Jays will go to Aberdeen, S.D., for a meet.
