Parks and Rec to move Hillcrest irrigation pond
The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Commission on Monday authorized Director Doug Hogan to pursue relocating the main irrigation pond for Hillcrest Municipal Golf Course.
Hogan said the existing pond is in bad shape as one of the pond’s levees sprung a leak earlier this summer.
“We were able to put a bandage on it, but there are problems with the liner as well,” he said.
A $610,000 improvement project to Hillcrest is ongoing. Hogan said Kevin Norby, a golf course architect who is overseeing the project, suggested moving the irrigation pond from its existing spot to a location between holes No. 10 and 17. By moving it to this site, Hogan said the pond would be in a better location to catch stormwater runoff and could be used to irrigate the golf course. The new pond location would also have new pumps and pipes that would allow for quicker irrigation of the golf course and be more energy efficient.
Hogan said Norby hasn’t had time to put together a solid estimate of how much this change would cost, but did provide a rough estimate of $100,000, including the new pumps and pipes.
Marlyn Bertsch, Hillcrest golf course superintendent, said he got an estimate of $110,000 for fixing the existing irrigation pond, not including new pumps.
Hogan said relocating the irrigation pond would benefit the city as well as the golf course.
“Putting the pond here would take care of a lot of stormwater runoff that currently washes off the golf course into properties further to the south,” he said.
In other business, the commission approved a request from Chairman Mike Landscoot to put together an employee survey. Landscoot said he wanted to do a survey to find out what the employees think about the commission, and give them a chance to offer suggestions for changes to their jobs or offer opinions on parks and recreation issues. Landscoot said the survey would be written, and employees could respond anonymously.
