Powerful Demons top Jays
Eathan Gumke didn’t try to do too much against Bismarck High on Thursday night.
“Bismarck doesn’t give you many mistakes — they’re the No. 1 team in the state for a reason,” Jamestown coach Larry Eslick said. “It’s good for these kids to match up against them as a measuring stick. Whatever we can get out of Bismarck is a testament to these kids.”
Jamestown managed just three wins in 14 matches, but did get bonus points out of its victors.
One of those matches was at 195, where Gumke held a 4-0 lead in a rather uneventful affair. However, Bismarck’s Evan Wahl tried to get away, and the second-ranked Gumke caught him and turned him over for the pin.
“You’ve just got to wait,” Gumke said. “If they’re stalling, the ref’s gonna call it and then they’ll open up, and you’re gonna get your chance.”
Gumke improved to 8-1 on the season and has five pins to his credit.
“Eathan’s methodical,” Eslick said. “Eathan being the patient guy he is — he’s gonna take advantage of the mistakes you give him.”
Kyle Anderson recorded Jamestown’s other pin, sticking Willie Sam in 3:23 at 220. Caleb Ellingson’s 10-1 major decision over Jake Sanders at 170 rounded out the Blue Jays’ wins.
Bismarck, with eight ranked wrestlers in the lineup, hammered out six pins, including four in the first period. Among the winners was top-ranked Ryan Blees, who is 21st in the nation at 160 and is headed to Oklahoma State next fall.
The Demons also pulled a few “upsets.” Bismarck’s Lane Kaseman nipped second-ranked Paxton Mewes 5-3 at 138, and Josh Brilz hung on for a 10-9 decision over fourth-ranked Triston Shipley at 182.
Bismarck co-coach Scott Knowlen said Kaseman’s win is a little deceiving.
“He’s a two-time state placewinner,” Knowlen said. “He got beat out in wrestle-offs. He’s in there now because of an injury. After Christmas, he’ll be at a different weight class and that’ll make room for both of them.”
The Blue Jays will take some time off. They don’t compete again until the Valley City tournament on Dec. 21.
