Austin Rene’s consistent play had him comfortably in the lead with two holes remaining on Monday at the Minot Invite.

The Jamestown High School sophomore bogeyed the final two holes, but it didn’t matter. He still secured a 1-over 73 to earn medalist honors at the opening meet of the season at Souris Valley Golf Course.

“I hit greens, hit fairways and made putts,” said Rene, who beat runners-up Jersey Kelly of Minot and Drew Lingle of Century by two strokes. “I just went out there and really didn’t think of anything. I wasn’t thinking of my score — just played my game.”

Rene’s score played a big part in Jamestown’s second-place finish. In the race for the team title, the Blue Jays nearly edged Minot, which carded a 314 to win by one stroke. Century was third with a 322.

“He was pretty steady all the way through,” Jamestown coach Dean Kraft said of Rene. “There was nothing where he really had to rescue himself from a big number.”

It’s only the second medalist for Jamestown in the past eight years. Teammate Brandon Stahlhut won a meet last season, but settled for a tie for fifth place this time around, shooting a 77.

“Looking at the teams early on, Minot, Jamestown and Century look like the three teams to beat,” Kraft said. “But it’s still so early. We have to understand that this is going to be a process. We’re a pretty veteran team. I expect us to come out and play well at the start. The question for us is, can we take that and continue to drop those scores?”

Nick Stockert (81) and Jakobi Lux (84) both had their scores used, while Brady Hoggarth (95) and Ty Spitzer (97) rounded out Jamestown’s lineup. Kraft said the latter two will be replaced by Cole Bennion and Ben Harris for the East-West Classic on Friday and Saturday, in an attempt to nail down the best six.

“One thing I’ve learned about this group is they practice well together,” Kraft said. “I can’t take very much credit for how good Austin and Brandon are. I’m not a swing guru or anything — I just try to motivate them and get them to focus and perform.”
