An exhausted Bismarck St. Mary’s team drove its proverbial shoulder into the door one last time.

In a match that went past 10:30 p.m., the Saints used one last gasp of air to break a tie in the fifth set. They scored seven of the final 10 points en route to a 3-2 win over Bismarck Century in semifinal play of the West Region tournament Friday night at the JHS gym.

Set scores were 25-19, 28-26, 25-27, 24-26 and 15-10.

“I’m just so proud of them because they were so tired, and they just kept pushing and pushing,” St. Mary’s coach Amy Heuer said of her team. “They believed. They never thought for a second they were beat.”

St. Mary’s plays Jamestown at 5 p.m. today in the championship match with the winner getting a No. 1 seed for the Class A state tournament, set for Nov. 21-23 at the Minot State Dome.

“The girls are so excited,” Heuer said. “This is beyond what they had hoped for.”

The match looked like it was going to be a quick one after the first two sets. St. Mary’s took advantage of three straight Century errors to close out the first set, and Mary Roller drilled the final kill in set 2 to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Roller had a team-high 14 kills.

“We talked; we were moving,” Heuer said. “We were covering well. There was a lot of communication.”

But Century fought back with two gut-wrenching wins. Katie Scherr had back-to-back kills in set 3 to avoid the sweep, and one of her kills combined with a Saints hitting error allowed Century to send it to a fifth set.

“We started to get a little tired,” Heuer said. “Our talking stopped. We just weren’t clicking the way we needed to be.”

The two teams traded points in the fifth set all the way up to seven, when the Saints took over. They rattled off five straight, helped out by a pair of kills from Ashley Wanner. Katelyn Schaffner pounded the match-clinching kill.

Century was led by Scherr’s 20 kills and plays Dickinson in a state-qualifier at 1 p.m.
