Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign ends for season
The bells will go silent and the red kettles will be packed away for another year later today as the Salvation Army Christmas campaign ends for the season. The bell ringers shut down for the season at 4 p.m. although donations will continue to be accepted through the mail and Salvation Army offices.
The last days of the campaign have ended with a flourish, said Lt. Mitch Brecto, one of the pastors with the Salvation Army in Jamestown.
“The last few days we’ve received quite a few checks and a few $100 bills,” he said. “The response from the community, especially during the match, has been great.”
The goal for this season is $147,000. The organization got a big boost this past weekend when a group of anonymous donors offered up to $2 million to match donations made in North Dakota and Minnesota over a two-day period. The Jamestown Salvation Army was allocated $25,000 of the total.
“We came up a bit short,” Brecto said. “We raised about $20,000 so we’re about $5,000 short. Still calculating it but it definitely gave us a boost.”
Which may leave them short of their seasonal goal. As of Dec. 18, the campaign had raised less than $100,000. The additional donations this past weekend and the matching funds could leave them as much as $10,000 short of the goal.
“We’re not sure if we’ll make our goal,” Brecto said. “We’re getting closer as we calculate all the final factors.”
Donations can be sent to the Jamestown Salvation Army worship and service center at 320 1st Ave. N. Anything received through the end of the year will be counted toward the goal.
The kettles and bells are not the only activities of the Salvation Army during the holiday season. The organization has also been busy distributing Christmas magazines and calendars to residents in the nursing homes and jails of the area.
“We distribute over 1000 Christmas magazines and 700 calendars each year,” Brecto said. “We include a little gift to everyone in the nursing homes.”
The Salvation Army also distributes food baskets to those families in need and operates the Angel Tree program. People choose tags from the Angel Tree and purchase gifts for the children enlisted on the tags.
