Schweigert, UND moving players around
The UND football team will open a new era Friday when first-year head coach Bubba Schweigert begins spring football practice at Memorial Stadium.
The coaching staff won’t be the only new look on campus. Schweigert and his staff plan to do some shifting of personnel.
“You want to put guys in the right spots for what we are trying to do,” Schweigert said. “I think that is especially true on defense because we have been a staff that has moved safeties to linebackers, linebackers to the D-line and there may be some sort of that taking place as we get moving into the spring. That is the first big thing, finding the right spots for the guys.”
Schweigert said the team has decided to move last year’s starting nose guard Ben Henson across the line to center.Henson, a senior from Buffalo, Minn., will be trading places with Shea Walker, who moves from center to nose guard. Walker, a senior from St. Paul, played on the defensive side of the ball in certain special teams situations a year ago.Another player on the move is senior Tyrhe Ivery. The Garland, Texas, native is moving back to wide receiver where he played his first two years on campus. As a freshman, he filled in for an injured Greg Hardin and started the last two games of the year. He caught a career-high eight passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns against South Dakota. His 3-yard score in the fourth quarter was part of a 21-point, fourth-quarter rally to help earn a share of the Great West Conference regular season title.Ivery saw little action as a defensive back last season. He had no starts, played six games and was in on three tackles.UND also released an updated roster on Tuesday, which confirmed some previous reports of players leaving the program and a couple of surprises. As suspected, UND safety Cam Kuksa, who started four games and made 46 tackles as a true freshman in 2013, is no longer on the roster. Kuksa suffered a neck injury late in the season and isn’t expected to return to college football.Other non-seniors off the roster include Kenny Golladay, Jameer Jackson, Daryl Brown, Dan Konowalski, Rumeal Harris, Ryan Cain, Mike Edwards, Anthony Fletcher, Kodee Varner, Darren Peterson and Joel Isenberger. The updated roster includes three new players: freshman defensive back Will Lyons of Reno, Nev., freshman quarterback Stetson Carr of Hazen, N.D., and freshman defensive back Josh Seibel of Bismarck.Carr, a transfer who redshirted at the University of Mary last season, is the brother of UND safety Baylee Carr.
