'Smiley' water tower coming down
GRAND FORKS (AP) -- The Grand Forks City Council has unanimously approved a bid to demolish the city's 77-year-old "Smiley" water tower.
The old tower with a painted smile and a wink will come down this fall, at a cost of around $62,000.
The council also approved a contract for "Smiley Jr.," which involves painting smiley faces on another water tower for about $13,000.
The plan was approved at the council's Monday meeting without discussion.
Supporters of the old tower said it's a landmark that should stay, but city officials said that would cost too much.
