The Mustangs got past Ellendale 45-44, while the Pirates defeated LaMoure-Litchville-Marion 50-21. A District 5 girls team hadn’t won the region in 20 years entering this week’s tournament, and that streak now increases to 21.

South Border freshman Amy Jacobson hit the game-winner under the basket with 7.1 seconds left on the clock to get past Ellendale by one. Jacobson only scored four points in the game, but underclassmen came up huge for the Mustangs, after senior leaders Kalli Scherbenske and Madison Schnabel fouled out in the fourth period.

Schnabel, the second of the two to exit the game, fouled out with 3:30 left to play. That led to Ellendale senior Shayna Mertz converting a bucket with 2:45 to go to give the Cardinals its first lead of the game at 42-41.

But Ellendale was unable to hang on. After Jacobson’s game-winner with less than 10 seconds to go, the Mustangs intercepted Ellendale’s inbounds pass at half court following an Ellendale timeout.

Schnabel and Scherbenske led the Mustangs (16-7) with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Ellendale (18-5) missed nine free throws in the game, and was led by Isabel Wedell with 13 points and Madilyn Bommersbach with 12.

The Pirates took care of business against LaMoure-Litchville-Marion by 29 points in the first semifinal game of the night. After leading 34-10 at the half, the Pirates held the Loboes scoreless in the third period and never looked back.

LaMoure-L-M struggled mightily offensively, converting just 7-of-37 shots from the field, which included going just 2-for-16 from 3-point land. The Pirates, on the other hand, shot close to 50 percent and were led by Sadie Rohrich with 13 points and Abby Randall with 10.

Rebecca Schmidt posted nine rebounds and six steals for the winning team. The Loboes were led by six points each from Jacey Alber and Kennedy Witt.

Kidder County and South Border will meet up in the title game in Hazelton on Thursday. The Loboes will take on the Cards for third place.

Region 4

Fallyn Freije tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds as Lakota-Edmore punched its ticket to the Region 4 championship game with a slow-moving 33-24 semifinal win over Carrington at the Devils Lake Sports Center.

Carrington led after one quarter, but Lakota-Edmore had a one-point lead at halftime and three after the third quarter. A big fourth helped secure the win.

The Raiders play North Star for the right to represent the region at the Class B state tournament March 20-22 at the Fargodome.

Carrington was paced by Kayla Hochhalter’s nine points.

Sarah Hagler and Allie Heisler had 20 and 18 points, respectively, as the North Star rallied from a 10-point deficit to earn its trip to the semis with a 64-61 win over Rolette-Wolford.

Rae Ann Beaver poured in 24 points in the losing effort, which saw the Comets lead 50-40 going into the fourth quarter, only to fall short.

Carrington and Rolette-Wolford play for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday, preceding the championship game.
