Stricken bus driver dies after Minneapolis crash
MINNEAPOLIS -- A Nicollet Mall sidewalk in downtown Minneapolis became the scene of an accident late Friday morning after a Metro Transit bus lost control and veered off the street. The driver was in “medical distress” and later died.
Witnesses said the bus hit garbage cans, street lights and the metal awning of the WCCO-TV building before finally coming to rest at 11th Street South.
A bicyclist suffered minor injuries, as did a bus passenger, who twisted an ankle while trying to assist the driver during the 10 a.m. incident. About a half-dozen passengers were on board.
The male driver died Friday afternoon at Hennepin County Medical Center. Metro Transit was not identifying him pending notification of relatives.
WCCO meteorologist Mike Augustyniak said he was almost hit as he walked by. He said the bus was moving slowly enough for him to run around it.
The accident remains under investigation, Metro Transit said.
