One important fact about United Way: When you donate to this nonprofit organization’s campaign, 99 percent of the money raised in Stutsman County stays here. That in turn means the funds can do more good right here at home.

Lynnette Stoddart, United Way of Stutsman County president, said so far $160,000 has been raised, which is a little behind where the group was last year at this time. She said they haven’t gotten through all the business donations as of yet, and she is confident they will reach the $200,000 goal.

The United Way of Stutsman County has 22 partner agencies that it supports with funds raised. Those funds only go to other nonprofit organizations that are either based in or provide service in Stutsman County.

A donation to the United Way helps the Buffalo Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross provide hotel rooms to a family whose house was destroyed by fire. The donation also helps the Red Cross provide coffee and other refreshments to firefighters and other emergency personnel on the scene of a fire.

United Way funds provide food to local food pantries run by Community Action Region VI and the Jamestown Salvation Army, which helps feed people in need.

United Way donations helped the Jamestown Optimist Club bring in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that gives books to children ages 5 and younger.

Last year the community donated $229,000 to the United Way of Stutsman County, which was a new record for the organization. While the current fundraising campaign wraps up at the end of February, donations are always accepted. Let’s see if we, as a community, can set a new fundraising record.
