T-hangar building work moves forward at JRA
The foundation walls for the T-hangar building under construction at the Jamestown Regional Airport should be up by the end of this week.
Steve Aldinger, project engineer for Interstate Engineering, said all the below-ground work for the T-hangar building should be completed by the end of next week. The $535,000 project will result in eight new hangars that the JRA will own and lease to private plane owners.
JRA will rent out six 1,123-square-foot hangars for $240 a month, one 1,266-square-foot hangar for $250 a month and one 1,738-square-foot hangar for $325 a month.
The outside of the building will be completed by the beginning of October. Schumacher Construction of Jamestown was the only firm to bid on the project. Schumacher also won the bid to build the concrete apron and taxi lane that will connect the T-hangar building to one of the airport runways.
The project will ultimately be paid for by funds from the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission. The authority approved securing a loan from Bank Forward for 25 years to provide the upfront construction funds.
The Airport Authority tasked JRA Manager Matt Leitner with securing letters of interest from people who expressed interest in renting a hangar once the T-hangar building is built. In February 2013, the Airport Authority held a community input meeting to gauge the public’s interest in renting hangar space at the airport. After that meeting Leitner said at least 10 people said they would rent hangar space at JRA if any space was available.
Leitner said Wednesday there had been a delay in getting a letter of intent template from the city attorney’s office. He said now that he has the letter of intent, he can meet with people and get them to sign.
Wayne Mathson, an authority member, said it was important those letters get signed because having people ready to rent the hangars was one of the conditions for receiving the construction loan.
Mathson and Airport Authority member Keith Veil will work with Leitner on getting the letters of intent signed.
In other business the Airport Authority:
* approved a 10-year lease with Kinder Morgan to rent four acres of property for $563.01 a month. The authority also approved a 10-year lease, with an option to extend the lease for five years beyond the 10 years, to rent eight acres to Dakota Brands for $432 a month.
* discussed the ongoing success of commercial passenger air service with SkyWest Airlines. Mayor Katie Andersen said it’s important that ancillary services, like car rentals, keep up with the demand for service because of the success of more people using the Jamestown Regional Airport. Veil said it is also important that Leitner stay in contact with SkyWest officials to make sure they are happy with how things are working for them here at the airport.
