Teen takes IMCA title
He’s not a rookie, but he’s also not too far removed from being one.
The Stock Car tour ran in conjunction with last week’s 25th annual Dakota Classic Modified Tour. The six-night tour started last Sunday at Minot’s Nodak Speedway and ended with championship night in Jamestown.
“This is just awesome,” Flory said. “I’ve wanted to win it since I was a little kid. To come out here and do it, my dreams are coming true I guess.”
Flory entered the night 10 points behind Elijah Zevenbergen, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, in the tour standings. Zevenbergen had claimed victories in Minot, Williston and Dickinson, while Flory rolled to victory in Estevan, Saskatchewan, heading into Friday’s championship.
But Zevenbergen, last year’s tour champion, ran into hard times in Jamestown. He posted a DNF in the second of three heat races and started the 25-lap feature at the tail-end of the 26-car field.
Flory, on the other hand, placed third in the second heat and started the feature in ninth. Flory motored up to third by the end, while Zevenbergen spun in corner No. 2 with three laps left and ended with another DNF in 19th position.
Flory ended up winning the title by five points (225-220) over Zevenbergen.
“I was sure that if it was possible, it was going to be possible tonight with (Zevenbergen) having problems in the heat race,” Flory said. “He was starting dead last, and I just stayed positive and knew that I could do this.”
The race was won by Perry Misner, of Garden City, Kansas. Misner started from the sixth position and overtook Minot’s Nathan Burke for the lead with five laps left.
Greg Wichman, of Bonduel, Wisconsin, started on the outside of the front row and led for 17 of the first 18 laps under heavy pressure from Burke. Burke started third and overtook the lead for laps No. 19 and 20 before being passed by Misner.
Misner, Burke and Flory finished 1-2-3.
“The car was great. It’s been great all week, and it’s been great all year,” Flory said. “The track was very racy. It was a very good race track.”
Flory has posted six feature wins this season, just his third behind the wheel of an IMCA Stock Car.
WISSOTA Street Stock drivers and Jamestown Speedway regulars, Jamestown’s Dustin Erickson and Kensal’s Casey Stangeland, also were in the field on Friday. Erickson started 19th and finished 12th, while Stangeland started 18th and finished with a DNF in 21st.
“This is only my second time here and it’s pretty awesome,” Flory said of Jamestown Speedway. “It’s a racy, tight little race track. It’s really fun.”
