Mandy Thiessen came through when the Jimmies needed it.

After Dakota State defeated the University of Jamestown in the opening game Friday in Madison, S.D., the junior from Steinbach, Manitoba tossed a gem.

Thiessen allowed just two hits to help snap the Jimmies’ five-game losing streak in a 4-1 win in the nightcap. Dakota State won the opener 2-0.

The Jimmies and Trojans play two again today in Madison.

Rachel Hughes outdueled Emily Snow in the opener.

Only one of the two runs Snow allowed was earned, but single runs by Dakota State (9-23, 4-4) in the second and third innings were enough.

Snow walked just one and struck out five, but took the loss.

The Jimmies were limited to four singles. Emily Snow went 2-for-3. Courtney Van Den Bussche and Hattie Fullmer had one hit each.

Thiessen fanned eight Trojans in her complete-game victory, which played out as another pitchers’ duel.

Scoreless through three innings, the Jimmies broke through for two runs in the top of the fourth inning as back-to-back walks by Emily Newman and Hanna Dunnigan got it brewing. Later, Jessica Snow singled home Newman and Dunnigan raced home on a groundout by Brook Rheault.

The Jimmies tacked on two more in the seventh inning.

Van Den Bussche and Rachael Fowler reached on consecutive singles. Fullmer was next and her triple doubled the Jimmies’ run total, making it 4-1.

The Trojans’ lone run off Thiessen came in the bottom of the fifth.

The Jimmies improved to 5-3 in North Star Athletic Association play and 16-16 overall.
