Three Blue Jays going to state

Jamestown’s Bailee Graves (left), Jenna Reed (middle) and Erin Mullowney pose with their medals after they placed at the West Region tennis meet on Saturday in Bismarck. Graves and Reed took sixth in doubles, and Mullowney was fifth in singles.

Erin Mullowney didn’t let a Friday setback derail her season.

The Jamestown High School senior fell in the semifinals of the West Region tournament to Keyanna Enget of Williston in a match that went three sets in Bismarck.

She came back on Saturday and won three matches, securing the No. 5 seed with fifth place by beating Catie Cordova of Mandan 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. She joins teammates Jenna Reed and Bailee Graves, who are going to state as a doubles team.

Mullowney, seeded fifth, beat Regan Bradley of St. Mary’s 6-0, 6-0 to qualify for state, and then embarked on a marathon with Jamie Stoppler of Century, eventually winning 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to get into the fifth-place match. She capped her strong weekend by downing Cordova.

“A great effort bouncing back after that match on Friday,” Jamestown coach Pat Mullowney said. “She just really battled all weekend.”

Mullowney meets Shanley’s Olivia Keelin in the opening round of the state singles tournament on Friday in Bismarck.

Seeded sixth, Reed and Graves fought off a disheartening loss to an unseeded opponent in the opening round on Friday. They won their next two matches including a triumph over Minot’s Kendra Collins and Latasha Klein, who were seeded one spot higher at fifth, that put them in the state tournament.

On Saturday, they finished 1-1, topping Kayla Wallace and Ireland Jung of Dickinson by identical 6-3 scores. They finished sixth with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (4) loss to Paige Fettig and Morgan Grinsteinner of Century.

“They were down after losing that first match (on Friday),” Mullowney said. “But they came back and played with confidence.”

The duo meets third-seeded Reagan Ingstad and Clarissa Olson of Valley City at the state doubles tournament on Friday.
