Turkey Trot organizers hope 150 participate

Carolyn Tomlin-Cichos will be walking, not running, again this year for the second annual Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk taking place on Thanksgiving Day at Coborn’s grocery store.

The run/walk is a fundraiser for the Community Action Region VI Food Pantry. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. inside the Park Plaza Shopping Center, where Coborn’s is located. Same-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Participants may also register before Thursday at Coborn’s and Bank Forward, 400 2nd Ave. SW, or online at The cost to register is $25 per person.

Tomlin-Cichos said she is helping her friend Geri Mittleider, the organizer for this event, register people for the run/walk, along with several other employees at Bank Forward, one of the event’s sponsors. Tomlin-Cichos said Mittleider came up with the idea for the event last year, and they held a kind-of impromptu run/walk.

“That was a little crazy, but we had a lot of fun,” Tomlin-Cichos said about the inaugural walk held in 2012.

This year so far 90 people have registered for the run/walk, according to Mittleider.

“Last year at this time we had about 40 people signed up,” she said.

This year Mittleider and company are hoping for 150 participants.

The start line for the run/walk has also been moved out into the Park Plaza Shopping Center.

“Last year we started from inside Coborn’s and we had like 70 people jammed in there,” Mittleider said. “This year we’re starting from inside the mall (Park Plaza), so we’ll have more room.”

In addition to the registration fee, Mittleider said organizers are encouraging participants to bring as many nonperishable food items and personal hygiene items as they can carry for the start of the race.

“We want people to bring as many donations as they can. This will help the food pantry keep its shelves stocked for the holiday,” she said.

Tomlin-Cichos said in addition to helping Mittleider with the run/walk, she and several Bank Forward staff members will take part in the race.

“We have several who are running, most of us are walking. Remember, it’s a run/walk,” she said, laughing while emphasizing the “walk” part.

Mittleider lives in Minneapolis, but grew up in Jamestown and most of her family lives here. She comes back for Thanksgiving each year and had walked in a similar Thanksgiving run/walk in Minneapolis.

“I thought ‘why not do one here,’” she said.

Mittleider is also encouraged by the long-range weather forecast from the National Weather Service. The NWS office in Bismarck is forecasting mostly sunny skies with a high of 23 for Thursday.

“It might be a little cold in the morning, but sunshine is always a good sign,” she said.
