United Way to host high tea fundraiser
The United Way of Stutsman County will host a Victorian high tea fundraiser this week at the superintendent’s house on the campus of the North Dakota State Hospital.
The first serving will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with servings at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The cost is $15 per person. Each serving will have seating for 70 people. Call 252-6390 to reserve seats.
Karla Bachmeier, United Way of Stutsman County executive director, and her sister, Victoria Hokanson, are hosting the high tea to raise funds for the United Way. Bachmeier said the local United Way chapter has set a goal of $200,000 for 2014, and she is hoping people will come out and enjoy the holiday atmosphere of the superintendent’s house.
“I held a tea fundraiser a few years ago and it did very well,” she said.
Hokanson and her husband, John, live in Roseburg, Ore., where they own and operate Hokanson’s Guest House. Their home is an 1882 Gothic Revival Victorian house with 7,000 square feet of living space.
“We host teas and high teas at our guest house all the time,” Hokanson said.
The difference between a tea and high tea, according to Hokanson, is there is usually some sort of protein served during a high tea.
“At a tea, cookies and scones are usually served,” she said. “With a high tea, it’s almost a full meal.”
Three courses will be served at the United Way high tea. The first course will be a selection of two types of salad, pasta with vegetables with a light vinegar and oil dressing and a rice and fruit salad called glorified rice. There will be four types of sandwiches as well including: egg salad with chives served on a dark bread like rye or pumpernickel; a cucumber and cream cheese served on a potato or butter bread; chicken and almond salad served on hearty-type bread like 12 grain; and ground beef with a dash of garlic served open-faced on a homemade wheat or white bread.
“These are all finger foods, something you can eat while talking and drinking tea,” Hokanson said.
The second course will be two types of scone — gingerbread and cranberry orange. Hokanson said she and Bachmeier will be sticking to the traditional English high tea accompaniment for scones — clotted cream.
“In America you see scones served with butter and jam. We will have clotted cream,” she said.
The third course will be an array of seven desserts, presented in bite-sized servings, which includes cookies, kuchen, and confectionaries.
Hokanson grew up in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School. This is her first visit to Jamestown in 40 years. She said she wanted to organize the high tea for Bachmeier as a way to give back to her sister and to the town she grew up in.
Hokanson said the high tea is for everyone to enjoy.
“We’re hoping families will want to stop in and enjoy some time together,” she said.
