The school announced Monday Kathy Hanek has resigned after one season. The Vikings went 13-12 last season and 3-5 in North Star Athletic Association.

VCSU had reached the national tournament the previous three seasons under longtime coach Jill DeVries and returned three starters, including honorable mention All-American selection Brittany Lehner. But the Vikings started the season 1-3 then lost four of their last five games to finish the season.

DeVries’ 219 wins are the most in school history.

Hanek had been the head coach for one season at Miles City Community College (Mont.) prior to getting the VCSU job.

The continued unseasonably cold weather has forced changes in the University of Jamestown women’s softball team’s schedule.

The Jimmies (7-9), who have not played since March 14, were scheduled to play Morningside, Iowa on Wednesday and Dakota Wesleyan, S.D., on Thursday, but both doubleheaders have been moved.

The Jimmies will play Morningside in Sioux City on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., while the games against Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell have been moved to Monday, March 31 at 3 p.m.

Prior to that, the Jimmies are scheduled to play Saturday in Moorhead against Concordia College.

Brady Anderson has been named the North Star Athletic Association’s baseball player of the week.

The former Blue Jay and Post 2 standout went 16-for-40 for the Valley City State baseball team last week in Tucson, Ariz. Anderson, a sophomore utility player, had three triples, two doubles, 10 RBI and scored five runs, while posting a slugging percentage of .575. He also walked twice and stole two bases.

It’s been a tough start for the Vikings, otherwise, though with a 9-18 record after getting swept on Monday in Tucson.

Jamestown (13-4) and Mayville State (16-7) are a combined 29-11, but VCSU (9-18), Dakota State (8-12), Dickinson State (4-18) and Presentation College (4-20) are 25-67. The initial top 25 poll of the season will be released today. Mayville State received votes in the preseason poll way back on Nov. 12.
