Virginia "Jean" Szarkowski

Virginia "Jean" Szarkowski, 86, of Jamestown, ND, passed away on her 67th Wedding Anniversary, November 4, 2013 with her husband and children by her side.

Virginia Gaedtke was born on October 17, 1927, under the care of Dr. Helena Wink, in Jamestown. She was the daughter of Anton and Elizabeth (Williamsen) Gaedtke. She graduated from St. Johns Academy in 1945. Jean married John Szarkowski on November 4, 1946 at the St. James Catholic Church, Jamestown. She worked for Nash Finch Co., then as a bookkeeper at Walshs Modern Market, Jamestown. Jean was part owner and manager of Buffalo Lanes from 1967 to 1995. She served as secretary of the North Dakota Bowling Proprietors Association from 1974 to 1975, and as the groups president from 1978 to 1980. She served on the State Board of Directors for AJBC (Later, YABA) for about 20 years, and was a certified coach/instructor, working with junior bowlers.

In 1990, Jean received the Marion Armey Award for outstanding service to North Dakota Junior Bowling. She was inducted into the Jamestown Womens Bowling Hall of Fame.

Jean was also a member of St. James Basilica and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Jean is survived by her husband, John Szarkowski, Jamestown; two sons, Richard Szarkowski, Jamestown and William (Kathy) Szarkowski, Stayton, OR; two daughters, Jane Szarkowski, Clearwater, MN and Linda (Dipak Adhikari) Szarkowski, Chicago, IL; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Josephine (Myron) Miska, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and sisters; and one son, Thomas.

Eucharist of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2013 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, with Father Sean Mulligan officiating.

Visitation: None scheduled. Arrangements are in the care of Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.
