Walkers’ registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m. To receive an official Walk to Defeat ALS T-shirt, participants will need to raise $50.

All proceeds will benefit The ALS Association, Minnesota/North Dakota/ South Dakota Chapter’s local care services and nationally-directed research.

Participants will accomplish a 3-mile walk around the lake. They will be treated to food, beverages and entertainment before and after completion of the walk.

ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system, characterized by the death of the motor neurons, which results in a gradual wasting away of voluntary muscles, often leading to total paralysis.

The life expectancy of a person living with ALS is usually two to five years from diagnosis, The ALS Association said. There is no known cause or cure for ALS, but advances in medical technology are allowing ALS patients to lead more productive lives. There are approximately 400 individuals living with ALS in Minnesota alone. Each week, two Minnesotans are diagnosed with ALS and two succumb to the disease, The ALS Association said.

The mission of The ALS Association is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through research and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with care and support.

Over the years, more than 37,400 individuals have participated in a local walk in cities throughout the Minnesotan, North Dakota and South Dakota areas. This year walkers joined together in Mankato, Minn., Grand Forks, Bismarck, Minot, Fargo-Moorhead, Rapid City, S.D., Rochester, Minn., St. Cloud, Minn., the Twin Cities and Sioux Falls, S.D., to Walk to Defeat ALS.

The support of those involved has helped raise more than $6.4 million. This year, The ALS Association is hoping to draw more than 350 people and raise $40,000 at its Fargo-Moorhead walk.
