Western N.D. bishop re-elected

The Rev. Mark E. Narum was re-elected May 30 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Western North Dakota Synod during the Synod Assembly May 30-31 at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Bismarck.

Narum was re-elected on the first ballot with 263 votes of the 294 votes cast (221 votes were needed for election). All other nominees received three or fewer votes.

Narum graduated from Minot State University in Minot and Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa. Wartburg is one of eight ELCA seminaries. Prior to becoming bishop of the synod in 2008, Narum had served as pastor of Prairie Lutheran Parish — a four-point parish consisting of ELCA congregations in North Dakota — since his ordination in 1999.

Five other ELCA bishops were also re-elected recently.

* The Rev. Michael L. Burk was re-elected May 31 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the Southeastern Iowa Synod of the ELCA. He was re-elected on the fourth ballot during the Synod Assembly May 30-June 1 at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Coralville, Iowa.

* The Rev. Mark W. Holmerud was re-elected May 31 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod of the ELCA. He was re-elected on the fourth ballot during the Synod Assembly May 30-June 1 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport in Burlingame, California.

* The Rev. Robert A. Rimbo was re-elected May 31 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan New York Synod during the Synod Assembly May 29-31 at the Hilton Long Island in Melville, New York.

* The Rev. Herman R. Yoos III was re-elected May 29 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the ELCA South Carolina Synod during the Synod Assembly May 29-31 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, South Carolina.

* The Rev. Samuel R. Zeiser was re-elected May 30 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the ELCA Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod during the Synod Assembly May 30-31 at Split Rock Resort in Lake Harmony, Pennsylvania.
