Westman leads Jimmies at Waldorf; Westman leads Jimmies at Waldorf
Mary Westman led the Jimmie women’s wrestling team Saturday at the Waldorf Open in Forest City, Iowa.
After piling up 27 points in her first two wins, Westman nipped Brittany David of Lindenwood 5-4 in the championship match.
The Jimmies went 15-11 overall in contested matches in their first action since late November. Up next is the WCWA National meet Jan. 24-25 in St. Louis.
Seven of the Jimmies’ 15 wins came at 155.
Christina Zamora won three of her four matches at 155. Two of her three wins were by technical fall. The senior from Orange County, Calif., lost a narrow 12-10 decision in the third-place match to Forrest Molinari of Missouri Baptist.
Elsewhere, sophomore Amy Fearnside advanced to the championship match at 116, but fell to Jessica Fresh of Waldorf. Fearnside had won her opening two matches by the combined scores of 23-2.
Dajan Treder split her four matches at 130.
Shai Mason opened with a win at 143, but had to injury default her final two matches.
The Jimmies got their only pin of the tournament from Renee Samano at 155.
Lindenwood had the most pins in the six-team field with 10.
Kimberly Cardenas (1-2), Julia Jacobs (1-2) and Daisy Mendez (1-2) each had one win on the day for the Jimmies.
Rosie Guzman (101), Laura Rodriguez (130), Precila Matar (143) and Kay-Ci Bele (143) also competed for the Jimmies.
Rounding out the tournament field were Oklahoma City University (8 pins), Missouri Baptist Univeristy (4), Missouri Valley College (3) and Waldorf (2).
