Williston school district enrollment grows by more than 800
WILLISTON, N.D. -- The Williston Public School District in western North Dakota saw its enrollment increase by more than 800 students over the previous school year.
As of Thursday, 3,472 students have enrolled in the K-12 district, with 1,833 in elementary, 539 in middle school and 1,100 in high school.
At the end of the 2013-14 school year, student enrollment was 2,642.
In May 2009, just as the region’s oil boom was beginning to ramp up, the district’s enrollment was 2,172.
In North Dakota’s oil-impacted counties, where the boom has fueled a steep increase in population, some school districts have seen a dramatic rise in student enrollment, forcing superintendents and staff to address such challenges as housing and teacher retention.
