Jeffrey Hieb, 42, was fishing with his 8-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son when the canoe tipped over. Two other boaters, Rhett Hall and his wife, Natalie, were able to reach the family and rescue the two children.

Capt. Dean Franchuk of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office said weather was to blame in the accident.

“It was quite windy that day,” he said.

Hieb was working in Dickinson at the time of the accident. His family had come to town to visit him, Franchuk said.
