Zoning change for Menards planned
The Jamestown Planning Commission will hold a special meeting to discuss zoning changes for the proposed Menards location at 8 a.m. March 31 at City Hall.
The special meeting would allow the City Council to hold its first reading of the zoning change in April and second reading in May.
The decision to hold the special meeting drew debate from commission members during the regular Monday meeting.
“I’m concerned this shortcuts the process and public notifications,” said Harley Trefz, commission member.
Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen requested the special meeting, saying the commission had enough on its agenda to warrant two meetings per month.
“We want to make sure we’re not holding up any projects this spring,” she said.
Commission member Harold Bensch moved to hold a special meeting with the Menards location zoning as the only topic. The motion died for a lack of a second.
Trefz moved to hold the special meeting and include other items on the agenda along with the Menards zoning. The motion also included a provision that the Planning Commission meet twice a month during April and May. That motion also died for a lack of a second.
David Hillerud, chairman of the Planning Commission, then scheduled the meeting on his own authority for March 31. He also said the commission could determine if a second meeting was necessary any month during the commission’s regular meeting on the second Monday of each month.The Planning Commission also addressed growth in the southwest part of Jamestown between the Walmart area and Jamestown Regional Medical Center. The commission had sent out 11 letters to property owners and agencies including Stutsman Rural Water District, the Stutsman County Water Board and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The agencies are charged with controlling natural water flow and providing potable water to the area.
Bart Davis, the only landowner in the area attending, said he was disappointed with the turnout. He said drainage was the major problem for developers in the area and hoped to see more cooperation.
Trefz said a more informal setting may be needed to attract landowners.
“This is not the forum they want to walk in to because they are not here,” he said.
In other business, the commission approved a re-plat of Riffe First Addition. The new plat combines the lots associated with Eventide at Hi-Acres into a single parcel as part of its remodeling project.
