BSC hosting teacher workshops in June

Teachers and school administrators can get information at the 2008 Teaching and Technology professional development workshops June 3-4 in Bismarck at the Best Western Doublewood Inn. Sessions are planned for Mac or PC users with hands-on and other instruction by educators and technology experts.

Knight initiatied into Pi Omega Pi

Sandra Knight, Adrian, N.D., is one of three new members who have been initiated into the Valley City (N.D.) State University chapter of Pi Omega Pi, a national honor so-ciety for business ed-ucation students. Participants in the ceremony included Tim Schilling, instructor and chapter adviser, Megan Nodland, chapter president, instructors Kristin Slyter and Rhonda Rode, and instructor and past adviser Dr. Kerry Gregoryk.

Blaskowski chosen Student of the Month

The staff at Pingree-Buchanan High School has selected Kari Blaskowski as the Student of the Month for March. Blaskowski, a senior, is the daughter of Randy and Lisa Blas-kowski of Jamestown. Activities she is in-volved in while in school include choir, band, speech, dance line, acalympics, National Honor Society, annual staff and JET. Blaskowski also enjoys playing the piano.

Benke chosen English Student of Month

Ryan Benke has been selected English Student of the Month for April. He is a student in Yvonne Fuglestad’s English II class. Benke was nominated for his academic success, his class participation and his writing skills. In addition, he is active in track and cross country. He will be inducted into the JHS National Honor Society this May.

Entzel performs in college concert

Emily Entzel, Jamestown, as a member of the Northwestern College Symphonette, performed a joint concert with Northwestern’s Symphonic Band on April 25.

BCN named Region 5 speech champions

BCN was named the Region 5 speech champions after earning 163 points at the recent event for nine teams. Placing second was Carrington, 116, and third was New Rockford Shey-enne, 99. Of the BCN winners, 22 students contributed points to take the win. That included 12 state qualifiers, three state alternates and the Regional Coach of the Year is Teresa Visser.

Jamestown College, Valley City State University take in event

Ten North Dakota college and universities participated in Winnipeg’s annual Rotary Career Symosium on April 9-10 to recruit Canadian students into North Dakota. For the first time the schools co-located together in a “Study North Dakota” Pavilion to increase the presence of North Dakota educational options for Manitoba students. More than 10,000 students, teachers, job seekers and guidance counselors from high schools and middle schools across Manitoba attended the show.

Students earn honors at Junior Music Festival

Forty-one students from southeast-central North Da-kota (including 20 students of two Jamestown teachers, Joann Herman and Jeanne Sorenson) participated in the 2008 NCFMC Junior Music Festival held Feb. 23 at Foss Hall on the Valley City College campus.

Huber recognized at history conference

Mark Huber, a senior at Valley City State University, received recognition at the Dakota History Conference in Sioux Falls on April 26. Huber was presented with the Cedric Cummings Award in recognition for reading a paper titled “Beneath Lake Saka-kawea” at last year’s conference. The paper told about the effects that building the Garrison Dam had on the lives on the American Indians living on Fort Bethold Reservation.

Wishek speech team takes honors at event

The Wishek High School Speech Team captured first place at the Region 6 Speech meet held in Linton on April 5. Wishek scored 195 points followed by Linton with 86 and Edgeley with 74. Other teams competing at the tournament included Ashley, Ellendale, Kulm, Gackle-Streeter, Litchville-Marion, Napoleon, Montpelier, Oakes and Tappen.

Presser presents lecture, recital

Clara Presser, senior vocal major and student body vice president, presented a lecture and recital during the College Music Society 2008 “Two Greats” Super Regional Conference, March 28-29 at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill.

JHS recognized for accreditation

On March 17, Jamestown High School was recognized for maintaining 100 years of continuous accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. This recognition occurred at an awards luncheon at the NCA CASI Annual Conference in Chicago.

Slaby admitted to NDSU with honors

Molly Slaby, daughter of Shawn and Lanna Slaby, Jamestown, has been admitted to North Dakota State University “With Distinction.” She will enter NDSU in fall 2008 and plans to major in nursing. Distinction means that NDSU is acknowledging Slaby as an honor student.

Lynne to be honored at University of Mary graduation

The University of Mary’s 2008 commencement ceremony, at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Bismarck Civic Center, will celebrate the awarding of a record-breaking 940 degrees. A total of 541 undergraduate and 371 master’s degrees will be presented to this year’s graduates of the university’s traditional and adult degree programs.
