NDSU growth may need to slow down, pres says

The interim president of North Dakota State University says the school's growth needs to slow down because it's causing money problems and there isn't enough classroom space.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The interim president of North Dakota State University says the school's growth needs to slow down because it's causing money problems and there isn't enough classroom space.

Dick Hanson says NDSU is having to lease space off campus to take care of the 14,189 students it already has. Some projections say enrollment will grow to about 16,000 in the next four years.

Meanwhile, NDSU isn't getting the tuition income it was expecting, in part because a larger number of students are being given tuition breaks.

Hanson has imposed a hiring freeze at NDSU, and he held an open forum Friday to discuss his decision. Students say they're worried about having bigger classes, and graduate students are concerned they may lose their tuition waivers.
