GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A record number of families in the Grand Forks area are benefiting from Toys for Tots this holiday season.
Coordinator Pat Berger says the campaign distributed presents to about 600 children younger than 12 during its three-day distribution. That's up from the 358 children served in 2008.
Berger says the greater need for the campaign this year is likely due to the economy.
Children and their families are referred to Toys for Tots by county social services and child care providers. Each child receives a ``big toy' and a stocking stuffer.
The Grand Forks campaign collected more than 1,300 toys. Leftover toys and other items, such as backpacks and watches, will be donated to the Spirit Lake Reservation and to local shelters.
