PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A recent survey in South Dakota schools shows one-third of students are overweight or obese.
Results of the 2008-09 state survey showed little change from the previous year: 17 percent of school-age children were overweight and 16.6 percent were obese.
The School Height Weight Report is a joint effort of the Departments of Health and Education. Participating schools are given scales and measuring boards to collect data.
The 223 schools that participated in the 2008-09 survey accounted for 29 percent of students in the state.
