WILLMAR, Minn. — A 20-year-old Paynesville, Minn., man, who told police he was a Texas gang member, made his first court appearance Monday on charges of attempting to stab a store security officer trying to stop him for shoplifting.

Eddie Eleazar Rincon faces felony charges of second-degree assault and terroristic threats in Kandiyohi County District Court. Unconditional bail was set at $100,000 with conditional bail at $5,000 cash.

According to the complaint, Willmar police were called to Wal-Mart around 8:45 p.m. Friday in response to a shoplifting incident that turned into an assault with a knife.

After security guards approached Rincon about stealing a pack of razor blades, he allegedly pulled out a knife and twice rammed it into the stomach of one of the guards. The knife, however, did not open.

Rincon also allegedly threatened to cut off the security guards’ heads.

Rincon allegedly told police that he is a Sur 13 gang member from Texas and was lying low in Minnesota. His criminal history includes a July 2008 conviction for second-degree assault in Texas.

The value of the razor blades was $17.78.

Rincon’s next court date is Jan. 4.
