MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) — A winter storm has forced the temporary closure of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Mount Rushmore officials closed the memorial Wednesday afternoon, but hoped to reopen Thursday at 8 a.m. if the weather cooperated.

The memorial was already scheduled to close Thursday at noon and remain closed through Friday for the Christmas holiday.

A winter storm was moving through the area Wednesday bringing heavy snow and blizzard-like conditions. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has warned of treacherous travel conditions across the state through Friday.
