Ellendale man killed in crash Tuesday afternoon

A 75-year-old Ellendale, N.D., man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a head-on crash near the South Dakota border in Dickey County, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The patrol said the man was driving 2002 Saturn passenger car northbound at about 1:50 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 281 about 5 miles south of Ellendale after entering North Dakota from South Dakota. He drove left of the center line and struck a 2001 GMC straight truck head-on. The truck, which was configured for carrying fuel, was driven by Kevin Barton, 38, Frederick, S.D.
The Ellendale man died at the scene. Barton was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, S.D., for treatment of injuries. Both were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.
The Saturn was totaled in the crash. The GMC sustained front-end damage.
The Ellendale man’s name has not been released. The crash remains under investigation.
