N.D. 2009 fatalities increase dramatically

The number of people who died on North Dakota roads last year took a big jump but fell short of a modern-day record.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of people who died on North Dakota roads last year took a big jump but fell short of a modern-day record.

The Highway Patrol says there were 140 fatalities in 2009, up 36 from the previous year and the most since 148 fatalities in 1982.

Lt. Jody Skogen says drunken drivers and people not wearing seat belts continue to be factors in the fatality count.
