Emmons County sheriff hiled as hero

Emmons County Sheriff Gary Sanders is being credited with saving the life of a Linton doctor.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Emmons County Sheriff Gary Sanders is being credited with saving the life of a Linton doctor.

Ron Wagner, who lives in Bismarck, rolled his vehicle into a ravine while traveling between the two cities earlier this month during a cold snap during which temperatures plunged well below zero.

Sanders was not content to just search from his vehicle. He got out and with the help of a flashlight searched the ditches and ravines off state Highway 1804. He eventually spotted Wagner's vehicle at about 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 8, about 200 feet from the roadway.

Sanders says he expected to find the worst, but Wagner was not seriously injured.

Wagner's wife, Terry, says she believes her husband would have died from the bitter cold without the efforts of the sheriff.
