Despite being without one of their top performers, the Jimmie men’s track and field team got off to a nice start on Saturday at the Bemidji State Super 8 meet.
Bottineau senior Kelly Roemmich had the lone win for the Jimmies, but they also had two second-place finishes in relays and three individual runner-up performances on the day.
“Overall it was a good start for us expect for the fact that Josh Ewalt was sick and couldn’t compete,” coach Ed Crawford said. “Overall, it was a good meet for us against mostly Division II competition.”
Roemmich won the 600 in a time of 1:24.40 to lead an impressive 1-3-4 JC finish.
Cody Roland crossed third in the race in a time of 1:27.38 and Nathan Christensen was fourth (1:27.98).
Jamestown High School grad Lief Rasmussen had the top distance performance for the Jimmies, coming across second in the mile in a time of 4:41.70.
The Jimmies had two of the top four times in the 55 hurdles and two of the best marks in the 400.
In the hurdle race, Scott Roemmich nipped teammate J.T. Petsch (8.43-8.54) for third.
Jarann Johnson and Ryan Heisler crossed fourth and fifth in the 400 with times of 53.59 and 54.79, respectively.
The Jimmies’ 4x400 relay and distance medley relays quartets each earned runner-up honors.
The Roemmichs, Christensen and Roland teamed for a time of 3:31.53 in the 1600, while Kendall Wiltzen, Brent Jansen, Kyle Heim and J.J. Koerber finished in 11:32.94, also good for second.
“The relays were good for us,” Crawford said.
The Jimmies also had a nice showing in the field.
Pole-vaulter Andrew Stoen led the way, nearly qualifying for nationals in his first go at it, getting over 14-7 1/2, just six inches off the needed mark. Teammate James Vollmer finished fifth after clearing 13-7 1/4.
Robert Nelson led the throwers. The junior from Britton, S.D., launched the shot 45-6 1/2 to also place second. He was also sixth in the weight throw.
The Jimmie men and women are back in action on Thursday with a dual at Northern State.
