Grand Forks to run hybrid buses

Grand Forks plans to start operating two hybrid-diesel buses in July. Public Works Director Todd Feland said the city also will run two regular diesel buses of the same model on the same routes, for comparison purposes.

GRAND FORKS (AP) — Grand Forks plans to start operating two hybrid-diesel buses in July.

Public Works Director Todd Feland said the city also will run two regular diesel buses of the same model on the same routes, for comparison purposes.

The hybrid buses each cost the city $550,000, which is $225,000 more than a regular diesel bus. City officials expect savings from lower fuel consumption and maintenance and operations costs.

Grand Forks used federal stimulus money and public transportation grants to pay for the buses. The city’s share of the cost is just under $100,000.
