$1.8 million gift puts N.D. Heritage Center closer to goal

Supporters of North Dakota's Heritage Center say a $1.8 million gift from Continental Resources Inc. means a proposed expansion project should be able to start construction this summer.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Supporters of North Dakota's Heritage Center say a $1.8 million gift from Continental Resources Inc. means a proposed expansion project should be able to start construction this summer.

Continental chief executive Harold Hamm presented the donation at a Heritage Center ceremony on Friday.

Continental is North Dakota's third-largest oil producer. Hamm is the chairman and majority shareholder of the Oklahoma-based company.

The Legislature has approved a $51.7 million project to double the size of the Heritage Center, which is a museum on the state Capitol grounds.

The project needs at least $6 million in private donations to start construction. Hamm's gift puts the private fundraising total so far at about $5.6 million.
