Finance ruling could affect N.D. campaigns

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says a U.S. Supreme Court ruling could affect North Dakota political campaigns. He is forming a task force to look into the matter.

BISMARCK (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says a U.S. Supreme Court ruling could affect North Dakota political campaigns. He is forming a task force to look into the matter.

The Supreme Court ruled that labor unions and corporations may spend as much of their money as they like on their own campaign ads to support or oppose candidates.

North Dakota law bars corporations and labor unions from contributing directly for “any political purpose.”

Stenehjem said he hasn’t analyzed all of the lengthy ruling, but he suspects it will change how North Dakota political campaigns are conducted.

North Dakota law also bars corporations and labor unions from contributing directly to candidate campaigns. The Supreme Court’s ruling lets that restriction stand.
