MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A Mandan man with a lengthy criminal history that includes a homicide conviction was taken to a Bismarck hospital after police say he injured himself during a standoff with officers.
Fifty-three-year-old Robert Gray was arrested Wednesday morning by SWAT team members who were trying to arrest him for an alleged assault on a Mandan woman. He is charged with terrorizing, aggravated assault and felonious restraint, all felonies.
Deputy Police Chief Paul Leingang said Gray had a self-inflicted wound to his throat but is expected to live.
During the standoff police evacuated the apartment building, stopped traffic around the building and contacted the nearby high school to limit student activity.
Gray was convicted in 1979 of homicide and assault with intent to commit homicide in Maryland. He also has multiple convictions in Pennsylvania and North Dakota.
