Helmer John Nelson, 73, Plainville, Kan., formerly of Sykeston, N.D., died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Rooks County Health Center, Plainville.
Mr. Nelson was born Sept. 6, 1936, in rural Sykeston, the son of Alvin J. and Mabel (Buskness) Nelson. He married Mary Ann Howe on Dec. 17, 1956, in Jamestown. They owned and operated several businesses together including a wrecking yard in North Dakota; Nelson Chevrolet car dealership, Plainville, in 1965; Hoppy’s Vans, Oberlin, Kan., from 1979 to 1989; American Golf Cars in Stockton, Kan., and Plainville; and HJN Enterprises, a trucking business, from 2000 to 2010. He served in the National Guard for 10 years, and spent some time driving trucks for Schult Homes, Plainville.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Debbie (Dale) Boucher, Plainville; two sons, Brian (Melanie), Plainville, and Dan (Melissa), Stockton; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Vickie Lee; a sister, Florence Keller; and a brother, Verdie.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Mosher-Kemp Family Funeral Home, Plainville, with the Rev. Daryl Sherraden officiating
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial: Plainville City Cemetery, Plainville.
Memorials: to Humane Society of the High Plains (for Rooks County animals) or the Rooks County Health Center for room monitors.
