DSU paper set to print again
A revamped Dickinson State University newspaper is set to print again after a seven-year hiatus. The Chronicle will supersede The Western Concept, which began printing in 1960 and ceased publication in spring 2003. The first issue is due out Wednesday.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — A revamped Dickinson State University newspaper is set to print again after a seven-year hiatus.
The Chronicle will supersede The Western Concept, which began printing in 1960 and ceased publication in spring 2003. The first issue is due out Wednesday.
“The goal here is to provide a voice to the student body,” said David Schreindl, an instructor of journalism and communication who serves as the publication’s adviser. “I think it’s to provide information to the masses at large and it’s also to prepare the students for a career in mass communications.”
The paper is being funded by advertising revenue, but Kevin Holten, coordinator of communications, marketing and events in the Office of Alumni & Foundation, said university funding is in the works.
Holten said he views the paper as something that can help students bond.
“I think that’s what it should be for, is to not (serve) as a rebellion-rag but more to bring students together,” he said. “It’d be great for domestic students to learn more about international students and just bring the group together as a whole.”
Assistant Editor Marie Dukart, a freshman, said the publication is “a good team environment.”
“People don’t know what’s going on around campus at all,” Dukart said. “You’ll hear people say, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that was happening last night,’ so I think people need to know.”
Schreindl said the goal for the next year and a half is to print monthly, though he hopes eventually The Chronicle will print weekly or twice a month. The paper also will be linked into the social networking site Facebook.
