BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota exports fell more than 21 percent in 2009 from the previous year, similar to the nationwide drop of 18 percent.

The U.S. Commercial Service, a part of the federal Commerce Department, says North Dakota was the 44th largest exporter among the states.

The agency says that while the recession hurt North Dakota exports of construction and agricultural machinery, exports of other products such as barley and canola oil were strong.

The top five North Dakota exports last year were farm tractors, crude oil, front-end shovel loaders, barley and canola oil. Exports totaled $2.2 billion.
