West Fargo contractor faces deportation
A West Fargo contractor who admitted late last year to stealing materials from other firms' building sites could be deported.
WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A West Fargo contractor who admitted late last year to stealing materials from other firms' building sites could be deported.
The attorney for Peter Spacek is seeking a prison sentence of less than one year, since a theft-related conviction with a sentence of a year or more can be grounds for deportation.
Prosecutors are recommending a three-year prison term, saying the stolen property in the case was valued at about $500,000.
Defense attorney Jesse Lange says that Spacek, a legal U.S. resident but not a citizen, came to America 26 years ago from Czechoslovakia. Lange says that since Czechoslovakia no longer exists, Spacek might not have a place to go.
Judge Georgia Dawson will rule on a sentence later.
