New ice road popular at Voyageurs National Park

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Officials say a new ice-road loop at Voyageurs National Park is proving popular.

The Duluth News Tribune says the loop was plowed for the first time this year and has been open about three weeks. It branches off from the park's main ice road.

Kathleen Przybylski (priz-BILL'-skee) is a management assistant at Voyageurs. She says the loop is two to three miles long and is getting more use than expected.

She says some people just drive out to watch sunsets. Others use it as a jumping-off point for angling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or exploring on foot.

Use of all ice roads in the park is free. Cross-country skis and snowshoes are available at the visitor center. Snowshoe use is free. There's a $5 per person charge for adult skis, but kid skis are free.
